Welcome to the Geelong MTB Clubs new website.

Fun Day had by all!

A big group of GMBC members turned up for the Club Day at the Youies. From Club champion to the slowest of C grade (that's me!) we rode the tracks, ate the barbie lunch (cooked to perfection by Jodie & Adele), and enjoyed socialising with other clubbies. Some people managed to also fall off their bikes - but let's not dwell on that, Steve.

The club championship winners were also announced, with trophies, jerseys & medals awarded. Congratulations to Rowan Smith who took out the Club Champions trophy for the 2nd year running and also to Glenn Withers who pushed him hard for the points.
Paul Muir was very pleased to win B grade honours, and Paul Hubber showed how consistency works by taking out C grade. Congratulations also to Ryan Lloyd (junior champ) & Jodie Clausen (women's champ & 3rd in C grade); to the big improvers - Anthony Ivelja (up from B to take 3rd in A grade) and Tim Tyler (up from C to take 2nd in B grade), and to Chris Fice (3rd in B) and Scott Harrison (2nd in C) who completed the podium positions.

What a great day to be a GMBC member!

The Yowie is Back!

Entries are open for the 2010 Yowie. Pick your distance - 33, 66 or 99km. We also have a kids race and a 15km option.
$500 for the mens and womens winners of the 99km

Go to the Entry Zone to enter.

The race is on the same day as the womens World Championship race in Geelong, so come race the Yowie, then head down and watch the World Champs.

See you there.

Trail Work at the You Yangs

As many of you will have noticed, there is work currently underway on Boulder Track (track 9) at the Stockyards area. This work is being funded by the GMBC (estimated at $4500) and done by the You Yangs MTB Club trail crew. GMBC will also be helping with the work on this track. It is planned that it will be finished for the Jayco Cup (national series) round in November that the GMBC is hosting.

You may have also noticed the slab for the picnic shelter at Stockyards. This was funded by the GMBC ($7190). This brings the total track work and infrastructure funded by the GMBC in the last 18 months to around $25000 - a lot for a club like ours.

Your Chance to Contribute
The Trail Committee has organised 3 dates for working bees in the next 6 months.

Sunday, 26 Sept 2010

Sunday, 24 Oct 2010

Sunday, 6 February2011

These working bees are open to all, however there may be a cap on numbers. We will let you know details such as where and when to meet, closer to the time. Meanwhile, pencil it in your diaries. This is a chance for us to put back into the tracks we ride so often and have a say in the design of the tracks.

See you there!

Otway Classic

Checkout this event coming in November on the United Way website
(PS. but don't forget the Dirtworks 100km and the Gravity 12hr MTB events on the same weekend!)

Cycle through Laos in 2011

In March 2011, Save the Children will be hosting a group of cyclists on a trip of a lifetime, cycling 400km from Vientiane to the World Heritage area of Luang Prabang in Laos.
On the journey the participants will visit one of the Save the Children programs and assist in painting a classroom for local children.
If this is something that interests you (or someone you know) visit www.savethechildren.org.au/laoscycle for more information.

Events update

There's so much going on at the moment - it is hard to keep up!

The 3rd InterWinter series event was run at Castlemaine on Sunday, with nearly 120 riders turning up for an XCO jaunt around the Pineys. It was a challenging course, with lots of short, sharp rises and descents and plenty of slippery spots! GMBC riders pushed themselves to the limit - eg Junior Ryan Lloyd gained 11th place in a very competitive A grade, followed closely by Ben May and Rowan Smith (who rode a large proportion of his race without his back rotor!). Rowan is currently sitting 4th in the series. In B grade Lee Floyd topped the podium and Mark Grundy gained enough points to be sitting 2nd in the series. Chad Sully DNF'ed due to illness but maintains his place at the top of C grade, followed closely by Stu Clarke.

It will all come down to the final round at the You Yangs on Sunday 1st August. Remember this is also the Club Champs Round with double points up for grabs - check out the current standings on the Results page. Even if you are not in line for Club Champs, it will be lots of fun with 3 different events - Individual Time Trial, XCO (multi-lap event) and an XC Criterium. Enter now at Entry Zone, $25 per rider ($5 extra on the day).

Meanwhile the Winter No Frills series is half way through (see below for details), but there's still 3 more fun races to come. Make it a priority to get to the You Yangs this Friday night - rego 6-7pm, race start 7.15pm sharp.

And of course you may have heard the news that there will be an MTBA National XC event at the You Yangs in November - Watch this space for more details as they come to hand!

And by the way - check out the photos from the InterWinter series on our Flickr stream here

Winter No Frills to start later!

XC Racing is alive and pumping at GMBC!

50 keen riders turned up for the first Winter NFF race last Friday night. It was amazing to watch the headlights snaking through the bush and see the smiles on the faces at the end. This Friday we will be trying a later start time to enable the workers to get an MTB hit before the weekend really starts. Rego will open around 6pm, and racing will start sharply at 7.15pm

GMBC Club Championship

Hey, remember that the 2010 GMBC Club Champions will be awarded later in the year with points accumulating from Summer & Winter No Frills series and also the InterWinter Series, with double points awarded for the You Yangs round on August 1. The points are based on the MTBA points system this year with 280 points for A grade 1st placegetters, 180 for B grade, 80 for C grade and so on. Check out the rules for the Club Championship and the current standings after Interwinter Rnd 1.
